Love in the Time of Foreclosure

Love in the Time of Foreclosure began as a blog in early 2009.

After a major marital crisis, an extensive home renovation followed by sudden unemployment, my husband Bob and I faced foreclosure.

As we struggled day to day to save our home, our sanity and our marriage, we found very little out there on the internet that wasn’t doom and gloom.

That’s why I began blogging honestly about our personal financial crisis and our commitment to rise above it.

We made a pledge to each other to learn everything we could from the experience and focus on our love.

What we found was that as we were losing our dream home, we were actually creating our dream life. One that had us firmly grounded in our love and free from material constraints.

It wasn’t all easy. It didn’t happen over night. It took work and support and love from each other and our amazing friends and family. I wrote about it all on the blog. From our struggle to let go of the house to our having to declare bankruptcy to our discovery that we were happier than we’d ever been. Even in foreclosure.

I was the only one doing this at the time and as a result, the blog got a lot of media attention…

Planet Money- NPR – Living with foreclosure

The Huffington Post – Dispatches from the Displaced

Business Week – A California Foreclosure Story: Can you be both broke and happy?

CurbedLA – Love in the Time of a Silver Lake Short Sale

The Los Angeles Times – front page

Chicago Magazine – Deal Estate – A Foreclosure with a Happy Ending

The Story with Dick Gordon – American Public Media (radio) – Love and Foreclosure

Apartment Therapy – Silver Ridge House Tour Residence Everything Must Go Sale

Now three years later, the story is an eBook published by indie digital publisher, Outpost19.

Dick Gordon called it “A genuine human adventure.”

Sara Clemence (co-founder of RecessionWire.com) said: “There are life lessons in here for all of us.”

Janelle Brown (author of “This is Where We Live”) said: “Walker’s personal real estate horror story is wrenching and emotionally honest, as she explores the impact of home ownership on relationships, dreams, and self-identity.”

And a woman in my mom’s book club said that Love in the Time of Foreclosure is “Enchanting and addictive.”

ENCHANTING AND ADDICTIVE!

What more could you ask for in a book, right? Yes!

In writing the story for publication, I had the opportunity to include stories that were too sensitive to post on the blog back when we were fighting foreclosure. I was able to fill in many blanks, thus giving the book even more meat than the blog. Our story is expanded and edited in the book and a fast read from start to finish.

I began blogging to make a difference for others in this situation.

Facing foreclosure.

Afraid of ending up there.

And what I hear constantly from people is that our story applies to any type of hardship and that it is universal.

I hope to reach even just 1% of Americans currently facing foreclosure so that they know they are not alone. That was the hardest part for me… the feeling that we were alone. And that we were big, stupid failures. Blogging at Love in the Time of Foreclosure gave me more than I ever imagined. The biggest gift was the knowledge that we weren’t alone. I hope to give that gift to others.

Please help me make a difference for those facing the loss of their homes… or anyone in a difficult situation… by sharing Love in the Time of Foreclosure.
